Happy Saint Patrick’s Day; time for the reinforcin’ o’ the sterotypes!
…and speaking of Saint Patrick. There’s a line from the prayer of Saint Patrick that has been on my mind in recent weeks. In the prayer, he asks that God be both “within and without” him. The particular aspect that I’ve been dwelling on are these lines:
Be in the heart of each to whom I speak;
In the mouth of each who speaks unto me.
The first time I read those lines and actually thought about them, I was surprised. Being the prideful ass that I am, it seems much more natural for me to ask that God be in my heart, so that others can appreciate it, and in my mouth, so that my choice words and mellifluous tones will inspire everyone who hears them. Did I mention that I’m a prideful ass? It’s such a pleasant release to acknowledge that Christ can be found in the mouths and faces of everyone who talks to me, from friends and coworkers to my baristas and the annoying streetcorner preacher who stands outside the coffeeshop. It’s not always easy to do, of course. But St. Pat’s prayer is a great reminder that God’s image is out there, walking around all over the place.
