Free Day

18 Oct 2003

The day got off to a strange start, and I never quite got back on track. I woke up at 6, and had my bags packed for the airport, for my trip to Kuala Lumpur. Found a cab to take me. Stumbled in, security check, wait in line, passport and ticket. And then the guy at the counter tells me that my ticket is for the 18th, and today is the 17th. My watch has been wrong for a few days, apparently.

So I corrected my watch, and bam, I’ve got 24 more hours that I hadn’t planned for. In a way, very exciting. After all, it would take a month or more of exploration to really do this city justice, to suck out all of the fun it has in store. So a free day, well, what a rare treat.

On the other hand. I had been counting on sleeping on the plane. And I had already done all of the “last things” I wanted to do in town, souvenirs and whatnot. And my feet hurt.

So I rode back into town, got another room for the night, dumped off my backpack, and headed out, this time away from the regular attractions, and towards downtown. And I’ve basically spent 12 hours walking around here, through markets and parks and shopping centers. And my feet hurt worse. But. Now I’m going to go sleep a lot.

The sole cause of man’s unhappiness is that he does not know how to stay quietly in his room.
